Last year I started on a project to play Space Station Zero using 15mm scifi figures. Although I have a bunch of sci-fi already in 28mm I was looking for something smaller and more portable, and in 28mm I still needed a lot of figures. Space Station Zero is a solo/coop game set in the interior of a large derelict ship with around 20 scenarios as part of a campaign, and is published by Snarling Badger games

I ordered some figures from Alternative armies as well as GZG including crews, mutants, robots and plants. I forgot to photo the AA figures before painting them, so here is the GZG figures (mostly robots). I could have used the same robot figures for all the different types in the game but I wanted each type represented with different figures.

I was planning to make a box for the board which is 22×30 inches but I am converting all measures to cm for 15mm. I found this storage box which is slightly bigger, and it gives me space to add details to interior walls. I’ll knock out the center pieces and create an insert to make the floor level when it is fully expanded.

Also I have some 28mm sci-fi scatter terrain I made which I have started converting to 15mm. I made too much 28mm terrain so its good to repurpose some to 15mm.

    Cheers

I scratch built some gun turrets for one of the scenarios in SSZ. The scenario requires 2 but if I play co-op then I need 4 (I think) so I thought why not! The base is a Dungeon and lasers sci fi part with a couple of 20mm slotta bases on top and Iliad Studio radar part IIRC. I added some spare 28mm scifi gun barrels and finger nail greebles to finish it off.

Also is one of my Alternative Armies crew and this guy is a spaceship pilot.

Here’s the first figures I painted – some crew for SSZ. They are all Alternative Armies figures and from their various 15mm sci-fi and Ion Age ranges.

    Spaceship pilot

    Technician

Octopod Medic – not the greatest sculpt and pretty blobby

    Adventurer

    Bearded Mercenary

I’m not super happy with them and I think its due to the layering being too subtle and the varnish dulling the colours. I’ll adjust my painting style as I pretty much painted them with the same techniques I use for 28mm figures but they don’t have the same surface area. I’ll go for stronger contrasts between colours and layers.

Is that in the flesh or just the photos?

In the flesh but the lighting for the photos didn’t help

Poop, I often find I dislike my photos but the actual real life models are ok. But if you don’t like them so much either..  pantaloons.

Here is the mutants I painted for SSZ. They are 15mm mutants from Alternative armies and great figures with lots of character and only a few double ups on figures poses.

I wanted them to look like ex Starship crew so I painted them still wearing the remnants of their uniforms of white and turquoise, and the odd red shirted trooper. These came out better than my crew figures so far who lack contrast on some of the colours and could be black lined better.

That’s a nice gaggle of groady grumps.  Well done!

Love the silver box idea it can be a space ship with rooms or turned over flat side to use as a playing space.
