Im just finishing my British paras for BKC2 and have added an Air Support Unit, on the list an option was for a P40 Kittyhawk which I went for just for variety. Im no expert on the air side of things in WW2 but whilst googling for colour schemes I looked into the Kittyhawk, and could not find any references for this being used in late war Europe which got me to thinking why is it on the army list if its not historically correct. So can anyone tell me if the Kittyhawk saw action in Europe in a ground support role from June 44 onwards, is the list incorrect, or am I reading it wrong?

Don’t know whether it’s the list (I don’t have it) or your reading of it, but no P-40s in NWE post-Overlord. Italy yes, the Pacific yes, the CBI yes, but NWE is a no.

Thanks for the reply you have confirmed what I was beginning to suspect, looks like I’ll have to reconsider my choice

Go for one of the types used by 2nd TAF – Spitfire, Mustang, Mosquito, Tempest, Typhoon, etc. Can’t go wrong with any of them.

If you need any more info on specific type (Spitfire Vc vs. Spitfire IXc, etc.), camo scheme, markings, etc. just ask and I’ll dig out my books. Happy to help.

I was trying for something different, as I have spitfires/typhoons for my British Infantry force, and thought the P40 option would bring some variety, and ive painted it too, thanks for the offer of help though and on that note do you know who flew (the limited ) ground cover during Op Market garden?

    IIRC:

83 Group (Spitfires & Typhoons) supported XXX Corps (“Garden”) whilst IXth AF (P-47s & P-51s) supported the airborne forces (“Market”), with 2nd TAF initially just tasked with road and rail interdiction well behind the German lines. Sometime around 21 September 2nd TAF was brought in for more direct support with B-25s, Mosquitos, Bostons, & Mustangs in addition to the other types mentioned.

This being said, much of the “ground support” was really just flak suppression to protect IX Carrier Command, and I’m sure you’re aware of the problems the Paras at Arnhem had with trying to get real air to ground support.

Thanks that very useful info to have and saved me loads of time looking it up especially as air combat is not really my field, I think im going to go with a P47, as they are the same points/stats in BKC2 as a P40, and im wondering if a P47 was what the author intended to put on the list rather than the P40. Thanks again for your help

It was a typo by Pete, the author of the rules, and IIRC has been amended in the errate section of the BKC forum.
